Legacy

-Jeremiah G Kelley
Before I am dead and gone
And I finally rest in peace
I hope to leave behind
An unforgettable legacy
Ever since I was a child
I wasn’t confident or convinced
I would never reach my full potential
Life never made too much sense
One day I picked up a pen
And my hand began to write
I couldn’t believe what I wrote
Suddenly so much came to light
I wanted to be successful
But my mind would have to expand
It was obvious I had a gift
That gift is in my hand
I had to keep on writing
So, my talent would be exposed
And as I kept on writing
Something beautiful began to unfold
I started putting words together
Words with meaning and that also rhymed
It became like poetry in motion
Derived from the depths of my mind
I wrote about pain and love
Passion, betrayal, and trust
Tales of life and death
Commitment, denial, and lust
And any other subject matter
That happened to cross my mind
Ideas would begin to arise
And intermingle at inappropriate times
I would write them down on paper, napkins
Or any material I could find
I would iterate it over and over
Until it was embedded in my mind
If this wicked prison life
Don’t become the death of me
Then it’s possible I’ll succeed
But my writings will forever be…
My Legacy!
