To Mi Prima

by Shadow

What’s good? I know this may be a hard time for you, but keep your head up. I don’t know why you had to come in here, but you did, and to be honest that shhh hurt me. Why? Ask yourself, was it worth it?

I don’t mean to be hard on you, but seriously. Honestly, I’m happy to see you, especially after about a year, but if I had a choice, I would prefer you to be out and not get a chance to see you.

This place isn’t where you want to be. I don’t want my loved ones going through our struggles. A lot of us don’t get to see our family, and we lose our freedom. We can’t be there for our families and take care of them. We can’t spend time with them, and a lot of us forget what it’s like to be on the outs.

You never really know what you got until it’s gone. We take a lot of things for granted, and we’d do just about anything to get it all back. I know you feel the same way. You’ll be out soon in no time, unlike me. I still have a long way to go.

Better yourself while you’re in here, so you can come back out as a more intelligent person. Earn some credits for your diploma, read some books, and educate yourself as much as you possibly can. All you have is time. Remember this, though: You can’t let the time do you, YOU got to do the time. Be productive and make it all worth it. You’ll get through this. I promise you.

I know you’re going through a lot but keep your head up. Don’t let the past hold you back. It sucks that I only get to see you from a distance, and I’m not able to talk to you. They’re trying to transfer me to county, so if you don’t see me for a while, just know That I might have moved on. I’m being put into the adult court, but I will be fighting it.

I know this news may be hard to take in, but regardless of what happens with my case and to me personally, just keep moving forward, and don’t cry for me. Don’t ever give up, and don’t ever look back. Do it for yourself. If you can’t do it for yourself, then please do it for me. I love you, Gen. Please take care of yourself.
